Overview

The easy Rim lake choice: tall pines, cool air, paddle water, and developed campgrounds close enough to walk to the shore.

Woods Canyon Lake works best when you want a dependable summer escape from Phoenix without turning the trip into a backroad puzzle. The campgrounds are developed, the roads are straightforward, and the lake gives the whole weekend an obvious center.

The tradeoff is popularity. The ramp, store, and lakeside areas can get crowded, especially on warm weekends. Treat the water like a morning and evening activity, then let the middle of the day be camp time under the pines.

Best for
Families, first-time Rim trips, kayaks, SUPs, and anyone who wants cool air without rough access.
Watch out for
Weekend crowds, tight ramp parking, afternoon wind, and fire restrictions that change fast.

Best version of the trip: book midweek, launch at first light, and keep lunch simple back at camp.

Getting There

From AZ-260 near Forest Lakes, follow the signed road into the Rim Lakes area and continue to Woods Canyon Lake. The main approach is paved and easy to follow, but traffic slows around the lake on busy days.

  1. Use Aspen or Spillway if walking distance to the water matters.
  2. Arrive early if you plan to unload at the boat ramp.
  3. Keep paddles to morning or evening when the lake is calmer.

Do not count on cell service for last-minute decisions. Save maps, reservation info, and fire restriction pages before the climb.

Reminders
  • Pack a PFD for every paddler, including SUP riders.
  • Store food and trash tightly; birds and small animals are bold here.
  • Bring layers. Even warm days can turn cool after sunset.
  • Bring cash for wood or fees because card access is not guaranteed.
Camping Info
  • Where to camp: Aspen CG & Spillway CG are the main lakeside loops; both have tables, rings, and vault toilets.
  • Hookups: None. Generators allowed only during posted hours.
  • Fires: Only when legal; drown/cold-out and pack out trash.
  • Boating: Best for kayaks, SUPs, canoes; small motor rules may apply.
  • Wildlife: Ravens and chipmunks will raid open food—secure everything.
My Notes

I book midweek, pick a site with afternoon shade, and treat the day like two short sessions on the water. The lake is usually best at first light; by lunch the ramp and shoreline feel much busier.

  • Comfort: A small tarp or awning transforms camp at 7,500'.
  • Food: Keep snacks simple for quick pre-dawn launches.
  • Photos: Golden hour on the west shore lights the rock just right.
