Overview

A polished lake campground on the edge of Show Low: shaded loops, clean facilities, easy coves, and a friendly developed-campground rhythm.

Fool Hollow sits on the edge of Show Low around 6,300 feet. You get paved access, real pads, and easy lake time: blue-hour coffee, slow shoreline walks, short paddles, and quick backup from town if the trip needs supplies.

It is popular on weekends. Reserve when you can, and pick an interior loop if you want less foot traffic after dark. Lakeside pads see more action near the ramps and day-use zones.

Best for
Families, showers, lake walks, beginner-friendly camping, and trips where town backup is useful.
Watch out for
Weekend demand, early morning ramp bustle, and wind shifts with monsoon cells.

Best version of the trip: choose an interior loop, use the coves at sunrise, and let the facilities make the weekend easier.

Getting There

From AZ-260 or AZ-60, follow signs in Show Low to Fool Hollow Lake Recreation Area.

  1. Watch for elk along 260/60 at dawn and dusk.
  2. Check in at the entrance; keep your dashboard tag visible.
  3. Loops are signed - lakeside pads see more foot traffic; interior loops are quieter.

My Notes

I had a great time here - busy but friendly crowd, super easy setup, and sunrise walks along the coves. If you want calmer nights, pick a pad back from the ramps and day-use lots. Coffee at blue hour on the shoreline is money.
