Overview

The bigger, more built-out Rim basecamp: developed loops, some electric sites, trail access from camp, and quick drives to Willow Springs Lake.

Canyon Point is the polished choice in this pair. It is not hidden or wild, but it is large, organized, and easier to recommend when the group wants predictable facilities, shade, and a central base near the Woods Canyon / Willow Springs side of the Rim.

Pick this over Black Canyon Rim when you want more campground infrastructure, some electric-site options, and direct access to nearby trails like Sinkhole and Back Alley. Pick Black Canyon Rim instead if you want the smaller FR 300 / Black Canyon Lake pocket.

Best for
Families, bigger rigs, electric-site options, Willow Springs access, and a more reliable developed basecamp.
Watch out for
Busy weekends, reservation pressure, loop traffic, and less quiet than the smaller Black Canyon Rim side.

Best version of the trip: choose a site one row off the main traffic, then use camp as the reliable hub for lakes, trails, and Rim weather.

Getting There

From Payson, take AZ 260 east toward the Rim. Canyon Point is well signed from the highway, so the decision is less about route-finding and more about arriving early enough to get the kind of site you want.

  1. Watch for elk at dawn and dusk on 260. That stretch can get real fast if you are not paying attention.
  2. Show up early on summer weekends. Between campers and lake traffic, the whole area wakes up fast.
  3. If you are towing, use the campground size to your advantage and scout the loops before committing to a tighter back-in.
Before You Go
Reminders
  • Reserve ahead in summer if you want a better choice of sites, especially if you need hookups.
  • Bring extra stakes and be ready for afternoon gusts and storms.
  • Check current Forest Service notices for water, fire restrictions, and seasonal facility details before driving up.
Camping Info
  • Sites: a large developed campground with tent, trailer, motorhome, double-site, and group-site options.
  • Hookups: some sites have electrical hookups, which is the practical reason this belongs in a different category than Black Canyon Rim.
  • Water and toilets: potable water in season and restrooms.
  • Fires: in rings only when restrictions allow.
  • Lakes: Willow Springs is the closest major water draw; Woods Canyon is also part of the broader Rim plan.
  • Trails: Sinkhole and Back Alley trails leave from the campground area and give non-lake days an easy fallback.
  • Cell: usually better near the highway, less reliable deeper in the loops.
My Notes

Canyon Point should feel like the high-capacity Rim basecamp, not just another pine campground. The useful difference is scale: more sites, more developed options, more traffic, and a better fit when comfort and logistics matter more than quiet.

  • Choose this over Black Canyon Rim: you want a larger developed campground, hookup options, and easier Willow Springs / trail access.
  • Choose Black Canyon Rim instead: you want the smaller FR 300 / Black Canyon Lake side and less big-campground energy.
  • Photo note: this page has enough images to show loop variety, site spacing, and evening pine light rather than using one generic forest-camp angle.
