Overview

A simple New Mexico lake stopover that wins by being quiet, clean, easy, and practical instead of trying to be epic.

Caballo Lake State Park was my first stop in New Mexico. I landed here looking for a clean, easy place to park, reset, and sleep hard. The campground is straightforward: big pull-in sites, lots of RV hookups, tent sites mixed in, ramadas over tables, and a layout that feels spread out enough to breathe.

The surprise was the comfort station. Flush toilets and showers, and not in a "good for a campground" way. Legit clean. The kind of bathroom you do not rush through. If you have been on the road for a few days, that matters.

Best for
Stopovers, big sites, ramadas, hookups, a playground, and a clean comfort-station setup.
Watch out for
Wind and weather. When it is cold and rainy, this becomes more of a "sleep and reset" stop than an explore spot.

Best version of the trip: use it as a dependable overnight, enjoy the space, and do not overcomplicate the plan.

Getting There

Caballo is an easy win if you are moving through southern New Mexico on I-25. This is one of those campgrounds that feels like it was designed to be found.

  1. From I-25, take Exit 59 (Caballo) and follow signage toward Caballo Lake State Park.
  2. Stay on the main park roads to your campground area. Roads are easy and well traveled.
  3. Pick a pull-in with a ramada if weather is questionable. It is free shade and free shelter.

If you arrive in wind or rain, just focus on comfort station proximity and a site that makes it easy to settle fast.

My Notes

This was my first stop in New Mexico. My visit was cold and rainy, so I spent most of the time in the van. That is not a complaint. This place did exactly what I needed. Quiet. Secluded. Easy.

  • Sites: big pull-ins with ramadas and picnic tables. Simple, comfortable, no drama.
  • Bathrooms: honestly amazing. Beautifully clean flush toilets and showers. I did not expect that here.
  • Mix: tent sites exist, but there are a lot of RV hookup sites too.
  • Walk: short walk from camp to the edge of the Rio Grande. Worth doing even if the lake is not calling.
  • Exploring: not too much to do right inside camp. This is more of a "nice secluded place to camp" than a big adventure base.
Choose It / Skip It
Good fit
You need a clean reset stop with showers, big pull-ins, ramadas, and easy I-25 access. It is strongest as a low-drama overnight or recovery day.
Bad fit
You want a destination-style lake trip, dense shade, or a campground with a lot to do right from the site. Caballo is practical first.
